Destiny Launches Web-Based C.E. Management System

At UCEA’s 2002 Annual Conference in Toronto, Destiny Solutions CEO Shaul Kuper announced
his company’s intention to build a Web-based system that would manage all functions
of a Continuing Education unit. The aim was to build a system that would manage
registrations, curricula, accounting, marketing, and CRM, and be used by staff, students
and instructors. Today, two years later, Destiny Solutions has delivered on its promise
and can point to two successful implementations.
The University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies, Toronto-based Destiny
Solutions first customer, completed the final phase of a four-stage implementation
of the system in February 2003. The solution - called OneCE - replaced legacy business
systems and streamlined operations, according to Mary Cone Barrie, Director of the
School of Continuing Studies.
“Before this integrated system was put into operation, we had units at the school
that operated in different architectures,” Barrie notes. “We had units that were
entering data into records that couldn’t be read by other units, and we had units
that were re-keying data that had been keyed by somebody else, but into something
that couldn’t be shared.” Most important according to Barrie, the School could not grow
without adding staff.
Today, Barrie’s U of Toronto staff is down to 35 from 50 four years ago, and the
operations have been streamlined and improved. “The staff are getting more important
work done - they are not dealing with run-of-the-mill, routine clerical [tasks] as
much as they used to. . . There is a lot more expanded intelligence in a place with
fewer people.”
“The system has proved especially advantageous because it operates 24/7, 365
days a year. During U of Toronto’s 2003 Christmas break, 261 students registered
over a two-week period when the office was empty. The school took in $166,000 (Canadian)
and nobody was there,” Barrie says.
In July, Destiny completed its second OneCE implementation, at the University of
California Santa Cruz.
