Student engagement is more important than ever. But our attention (and that of your students) is under an unprecedented assault. Why is student engagement such a challenge?

Well, the century-old paradigm of “I lecture, you listen” is now failing to keep students involved, motivated and actively learning. Does this news about declining engagement come as a surprise? It shouldn’t.

After all, how can anyone expect you to compete with a 3G enabled mobile device? Does your assigned reading really stand a chance? And what do these assignments mean for your students after they leave the classroom?

For these reasons, student engagement is nothing short of a national challenge. And do you know why it’s an important obstacle to overcome? Because…

Improving Student Engagement Can Translate to Increased Knowledge Retention by Learners.

But there’s a problem. Good advice on how to overcome these ubiquitous classroom distractions has not been easily available. I mean, have you found a comprehensive resource that offers post-secondary and continuing education instructors a dynamic model for engaging students? If so, please leave a comment below.

Otherwise…

You’re here because you desperately need actionable tips, strategies and techniques that have been proven to grab and hold the all-too-fleeting interest of students. Well, you aren’t alone…

Because understanding the changing student engagement landscape is a must for every single faculty member. That’s right: Even experienced instructors benefit from a refresher… especially, as online and blended learning gain prominence.

But you still might be wondering…

Is Student Engagement Just a Buzzword?

No, student engagement is not a buzzword. Think of it this way: When your students are focused in lecture, aggressively tapping keys, trying hard to keep pace with your voice, they are making a psychological and emotional investment in learning. Most students, most of the time, try very hard to absorb what school offers. But you have to admit, it is a challenge.

Especially when compared to everything else society shoves in their faces. Think of it this way: In a world of 3D Movies, tablets and smart phones, you need to ask yourself, “Can you really be surprised when your bland Powerpoint-dependent lecture on cellular respiration falls flat?”

But there’s a flip side. If you can engage students then, teaching becomes fun again! And so does learning. Everybody wins. You drive boredom out of your classroom. Distractions are vanquished until long after the bell. And best of all? Your students take pride not simply in earning straight-A’s, but in understanding how the lessons impact their life outside school, you know, in the real world. That’s why student engagement is increasingly seen as an indicator of a successful classroom.

So how do you figure out how to gain and maintain the interest and rapt attention of your class, – especially in the highly heterogeneous continuing education setting?

Why Student Engagement Matters in Continuing Education, Outreach and Extension Divisions:

Well, frankly, this is a very important issue. And it matters more each day. This is because the modern higher education industry continues to shift away from the traditional cohort model. Continuing and adult education increasingly impact the bottom line of North American colleges and universities.

This shouldn’t surprise you…

As knowledge-based job opportunities dominate the employment landscape, “just-in-time” education is fast becoming critical. The skills you learned in university or college need to be built upon. Actually…

You’ve probably already seen an increase in continuing education students at your own post-secondary institution. So if you’re having trouble wrapping your mind around the changing tide of education, think of it this way: Employers in all industries need workers with applicable and up to date skills. Now, from a continuing education business perspective…

Do you know what that means?

I’ll tell you. See, the traditional higher education student is 18-22 years of age, and will be done with university in 4 short years. But you must wonder, “Can this once-in-a-lifetime education paradigm really stack up against our evolving economy?” That’s one of the key reasons continuing education divisions, professional development extensions and outreach programs are growing in bottom-line value to institutions like yours. So now you might be wondering:

Why Do Continuing and Adult Education Students Require Unique Engagement Strategies?

It’s a good question. But the answer is easy. If you think of the traditional students we just described as a homogenous cohort of youth then, just picture the exact opposite! Instead of all starting on level ground, adult continuing education students can be…

25 years old to 55 years old (adult students pursue continuing education at different stages of life depending on their educational needs);

Responsible for taking care of children or other dependents;

Adult students may work full time, part time, be unemployed or under-employed… (all of which come with their own unique brand of stress);

Adult students may have a more focused, applicable and discrete goal for pursuing a specific course, certificate or degree program;

Continuing education students may be retooling after a layoff, enhancing a particular skill, or perhaps even coming off active military duty.

And those are just a handful of the many reasons adult students pursuing their learning goals in outreach, extension and continuing education divisions require unique engagement strategies to maximize the likelihood of achieving success. Obviously effective engagement with continuing education students presents a unique opportunity, – if you do it right!

Why Most Strategies to Increase Student Engagement in Continuing Education Fall Short?

Unfortunately, a high percentage of student engagement best practice is brushed off as common sense. This is a big mistake. You need to look at student engagement critically. And hold yourself to these high standards. It sounds daunting. But if you do it right, the rewards are big.

So it’s important to test and implement engagement tactics, before judging them at face value, It’s also why you absolutely need a wide variety of different engagement strategies to test and perfect when tackling the unique student engagement challenges that come with administering continuing education.

But ideas are not enough…

The reason is, in student engagement, execution matters. To stay abreast of changing student engagement best practice, you would be wise to heed step-by-step instructions for implementation. The most valuable advice though, is from those who’ve already had success improving their student engagement (and ROI!) of continuing education business units.

Leading technology firm offers two $2,500 scholarships for adult students

Destiny Solutions, the leading innovator of lifelong learning business solutions, today announced that applications are being accepted for the annual Mary Cone Barrie Scholarship.

Named in honor of the late Director of the School of Continuing Studies at the University of Toronto, Dr. Mary Cone Barrie, the scholarship is awarded annually to two non-traditional students.

“A trusted friend and mentor, Mary tirelessly championed the lifelong learner and always supported non-traditional education. Devoted to her students, staff and instructors she went above and beyond to ensure the success of non-traditional education,” said Shaul Kuper, president and CEO of Destiny Solutions. “It is our hope that by helping students succeed with the Mary Cone Barrie Scholarship, her legacy is carried forward.”

Although 75 percent of America’s college students are non-traditional, there are a very limited number of scholarship opportunities for this group. Destiny Solutions is working towards change, by offering two awards of $2,500 each to two qualified lifelong learners.

The Mary Cone Barrie Scholarship is open to any non-traditional learner studying at an accredited institution in the United States or Canada. Applications can be found on the Destiny Solutions website, and are due back by June 29, 2012. The scholarship will be awarded in late August.

For last year’s winners, the scholarship proved a significant aid in achieving their goals. Joseph Puhak, a detective from Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina enrolled in a Bachelor of Science, criminal justice program at Western Carolina University, made sure to express the importance of the scholarship.

“Through a recent promotion with added stressors and responsibility I started to feel the effects of a career and learning burnout. Since I found out about the scholarship, my enthusiasm is much higher and I have found a new level of motivation,” he said “Again, I thank Destiny Solutions and the Barrie Family. I have no choice but to repay both parties with good grades and my heartfelt pursuit of success.”

The other winner, Asta Becker from Charlotte, North Carolina, echoed his sentiments.

“I always wanted more, it’s just that at the beginning I didn’t know how to get there. I went step by step until I found out that education would let me take the path I wanted. Thank you very much for the scholarship. It’s still hard to believe I won,” said Becker, a student in the Bachelor of Commerce program at Pfeiffer University.

To read about why the scholarship is named in Dr Barrie’s honor, please see Kuper’s piece at www.evolllution.com/featured/a-non-traditional-scholarship-with-a-non-traditional-story/

No. 1 ranked online institution in the nation deploys new technology to expand market potential and improve business agility.

TORONTO, March 27, 2012 - Destiny Solutions, the leading innovator of lifelong learning business solutions, today announced that Penn State World Campus has introduced a new initiative aimed at dramatically growing its global online business. The effort, enabled by Destiny One™, centers around overhauling and scaling how the institution engages working professionals.

“Our adoption of Destiny One enables us to reimagine how we do business with current and prospective adult online students interested in a Penn State degree,” said Wayne Smutz, executive director of Penn State World Campus and associate vice president for Academic Outreach. “The successful implementation of new services delivers a richer experience for adult learners to research and choose the best educational program to advance their career or prepare for a new profession.”

Integrating Destiny One with its various mainframe systems, Penn State World Campus has centralized silos of data onto a single database, eliminated dozens of shadow systems and created a single platform to deploy new services through its existing infrastructure. This will allow World Campus to improve operational efficiency and fiscal control, while providing World Campus and Penn State academic units with a wealth of business insight to stay ahead of global market needs.

In the face of state funding cuts, the new platform will enable Penn State World Campus to rapidly and more efficiently deliver new student-facing capabilities to improve student engagement and grow enrollment. With the first set of capabilities to streamline program and course development already in place, the initiative will also include interactive enrollment, flexible registration and payment, and student degree tracking.

“In the lifelong education industry, it is critical for online institutions to effectively engage adult learners and quickly and efficiently respond to global market demand,” said Shaul Kuper, president and CEO of Destiny Solutions. “Destiny One is crafted from the ground up to help discerning institutions change the way they do business to stay ahead of the pack. We look forward to continuing our work with Penn State World Campus as it adds new services to advance its growth in online learning.”

American Association of State Colleges and Universities Presents: “Tools and Strategies for Institutional Transformation”

February 9-11, 2012 – JW Marriot San Antonio Hill Country, Texas

Across American State Colleges and Universities, it’s time for action. That’s because, in the months since the AASCU summer session, innovative ideas have taken hold amongst member campuses. Today, constructive concepts for continuing education are beginning to crystallize.

And AASCU higher education institutions are boldly responding to the challenges of this new century. Right now, there’s a particular focus on data analytics, blended courses, “flipped” courses, large course transformation and national courses created and taught by consortiums of faculty. This isn’t your grandfather’s classroom.

But it’s not just about course redesign. The AASCU 2012 Academic Affairs Winter Meeting is also zeroing in on a number of other issues critical to higher education. That’s right…

By examining how academic affairs officers at AASCU member institutions are overcoming systemic hurdles, like budget reductions, accreditation challenges and barriers to effective enrollment management, provosts can finally get the rare opportunity to benchmark in a meaningful way. And that’s the kind of networking that can help drive powerful institutional transformation, fast.

But don’t worry, because at the 2012 AASCU Academic Affairs Winter Meeting, you won’t hear a homogeneous sentiment. Provosts are encouraged to invite colleagues from their campuses to participate. This diverse roster of viewpoints is pivotal in catalyzing institutional transformation in the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. By attending this exciting upcoming meeting you’re assured to learn from other industry leaders on the cutting edge of course redesign.

So if you’re serious about driving institutional change, attend AASCU 2012 Academic Affairs Winter Meeting. You’ll join expert speakers Cable Green and Vincent Tinto to discuss innovative strategies for student success that will drive your institution of higher education forward, at an exhilarating pace.

As a key sponsor, Destiny Solutions will be showcasing Destiny OneTM, the premier lifelong learning business solution designed exclusively for the divergent needs of non-traditional education. Destiny Solutions executives will also be hosting an exclusive, invitation-only executive luncheon.

Software firm unites top higher education thought leaders in an online forum, provoking collaboration and community to progress higher education

TORONTO, January 17, 2011 – Destiny Solutions, the leading innovator of lifelong learning business solutions, today announced a grassroots initiative aimed at increasing discussion about lifelong learning and improving higher education.

First and foremost a means of uniting individuals, the initiative, called the EvoLLLution, is an online newspaper, written exclusively by higher education stakeholders. Its contributors come together to form the only community, devoted exclusively to exploring and improving non-traditional education.

Contributors Edward Abeyta, director of K-16 Program at UC San Diego, Rebecca Smith, vice president of San Diego Workforce Partnership and Terry Rawls, provost of Heald College, explain in a short documentary why the EvoLLLution is needed.

“Our profession of lifelong learning is so fragmented and so variant in approaches that having an entity like EvoLLLution pulling all these different mindsets and views into a vibrant and organic community … ultimately helps the profession of lifelong learning define itself,” Abeyta said in the documentary.

The EvoLLLution is the brainchild of Destiny Solutions Founder and CEO, Shaul Kuper. It was founded as a means of bringing together a community of thought leaders, who embrace non-traditional education and lifelong learning.

“In the 10 years that I’ve been a part of the education industry, I’ve seen some incredible innovations and ideas that stand to change higher education for the better,” Kuper said. “The problem is, there has never been a forum for all stakeholders to come together, discuss their challenges, leverage their successes and propel education into the 21st century.”

Higher education has undergone substantial change over the last few decades. Today, only about 15 percent of higher education students still fit the traditional definition of young adults, age 18 to 22, who live on campus and go to school full time. Furthermore, the rapid pace of technological advancement has meant that education can no longer be a one-time experience and has instead turned into a lifelong pursuit.

Aiming to lead the transformative change in lifelong learning, the EvoLLLution brings the innovations founded in extension schools and continuing education divisions to the forefront of their institutions by provoking discussion among those who are already spearheading the requisite changes in higher education.

The EvoLLLution will be launching on January 30. For more information, please visit our website.

Pioneering continuing education division modernizes constituent, enrollment and administrative management processes and consolidates many disparate systems

TORONTO, December 20, 2011 – Destiny Solutions today announced that North Carolina State University’s McKimmon Center for Extension and Continuing Education (MCE&CE), a 28,000 student center named in honor of the service of the continuing education pioneer, Dr. Jane S. McKimmon, has successfully implemented Destiny One to enhance constituent engagement, increase enrollment and improve customer service.

“From the very beginning, we chose Destiny Solutions because they have the products that satisfy our continuing education business needs now and also our future needs, as our programs and services evolve,” said Alice Warren, vice provost, Continuing Education. “Our experience with the implementation of Destiny One is proof that institutions can undertake a business infrastructure realignment that results in a new view of information and solid business processes without vast customizations.”

Operating eight distinct units, each offering multifaceted services and programs, MCE&CE was challenged by disparate business systems and processes. Systems for program offerings, enrollment and registration, marketing and administration simply weren’t interfacing with one another, which hampered business operations, collaboration and compliance, and hindered improvements to enrollment, student self-service and overall student satisfaction.

By extending North Carolina State University’s PeopleSoft Enterprise Campus Solution with Destiny One, MCE&CE has been able to retire numerous legacy systems, centralize common administrative processes and fortify brand cohesion among its operating units. Furthermore, through Destiny One’s flexible architecture, MCE&CE units now have greater agility to execute their own constituent engagement strategies, while gaining the economies of a shared services platform and one version of the truth for reporting and business intelligence of enrollments, courses and other key business indicators.

Today the new system supports approximately 40 users and thousands of students, and will scale to other campus units during 2012.

“With Destiny One, North Carolina State University is able to leverage a unified business suite designed exclusively for non-traditional education. With best practice workflows, pre-built integrations and implementation methodologies, Destiny One empowers NCSU with better business improvements with IT investments, business and IT agility, and lower total cost of ownership,” said Shaul Kuper, president and CEO of Destiny Solutions. “We look forward to our continued work with MCE&CE and providing greater visibility, capabilities and business value to both their organization and students alike.”

For more information on Destiny One, please visit: http://www.destinysolutions.com/product/destinyone-overview/
